Home Affairs cracks down on booking fraud with new online appointment system
The Department of Home Affairs has launched an upgraded online booking platform designed to stop appointment-slot fraud, improve access to services, and strengthen security by linking bookings to verified user profiles.
The Department of Home Affairs has unveiled a revamped online booking system aimed at combating fraud and making it easier for South Africans to access essential government services.
Launched on 18 June 2026 through the MyHomeAffairsOnline platform, the upgraded system introduces new security features that require users to create a profile linked to their South African ID number and email address before booking an appointment.
The move comes after years of abuse of the previous booking platform, where criminal syndicates and unscrupulous individuals exploited weaknesses in the system to reserve appointment slots and sell them to members of the public.
As a result, many South Africans experienced difficulties securing appointments for critical services such as identity documents, passports and other Home Affairs transactions.
According to the department, the new system is designed to ensure that appointment slots are reserved for legitimate users while strengthening the integrity of the booking process.
Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, said the upgrade forms part of the department's broader digital transformation programme aimed at improving service delivery and restoring public trust.
"For too long, ordinary South Africans were disadvantaged by criminals who exploited weaknesses in the previous booking system to hoard appointment slots and sell them for profit," Schreiber said.
"The migration of our booking system to MyHomeAffairsOnline directly addresses this abuse by linking bookings to verified user profiles, strengthening the integrity of the system and protecting citizens' access to services."
He added that the reform advances the department's vision of "Home Affairs @ home" by making services more secure, accessible and convenient for citizens.
The upgraded booking platform is available through MyHomeAffairsOnline and represents another step towards modernising government services while tackling corruption and fraud within public systems.
Home Affairs believes the enhanced system will help ensure fair access to appointments and improve the overall experience for citizens seeking essential services.
