South Africa’s Amajimbos saw their FIFA U‑17 World Cup journey end in Qatar after a 3–0 loss to Japan in the Round of 32 at Aspire Zone in Doha. After advancing from the group stage with a win over Bolivia and a draw against hosts Qatar, the young South Africans were unable to overcome a disciplined Japanese side.
The first half was balanced, with the Amajimbos creating a few opportunities and goalkeeper Lwandiso Radebe making important saves. However, early in the second half, Japan broke the deadlock when Hitoro Asada converted a cross from the left, putting the hosts ahead. Momentum shifted further as Minato Yoshida doubled the lead with a precise strike from distance, followed by Shota Fujii, who sealed the result with a powerful header from a corner in the 72nd minute.
An injury forced Radebe off, with substitute Keabetswe Morake coming on but unable to prevent the additional goals. Despite the defeat, coach Vela Khumalo praised his side’s effort, saying they showed character and discipline against a strong opponent. He added that reaching the Round of 32 marked a significant milestone for South African youth football, providing valuable experience for future campaigns.
