IEC welcomes announcement of 4 November 2026 local government elections date
The Electoral Commission says the announcement of the 2026 municipal elections date provides certainty for planning, while urging eligible voters to register ahead of the polls.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the 2026 Local Government Elections will be held on 4 November.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the declaration offers much-needed clarity for all stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
“The announcement of the election date provides clarity for all role players and certainty of planning for the Electoral Commission as we continue our work to deliver free and fair municipal elections,” Mamabolo said.
He encouraged all eligible citizens across South Africa who are not yet registered, or who have relocated, to ensure they are registered in the voting district where they ordinarily reside. Voters are reminded that they may only cast their ballots at the voting station where they are registered.
Mamabolo also noted that the President’s announcement does not yet constitute the formal proclamation of the election date. In terms of legislation, the official proclamation will be made by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, at which point the voters’ roll will be closed.
Citizens are encouraged to participate in the national voter registration weekend scheduled for 20 and 21 June 2026 at their local voting stations, where they intend to vote on election day.
