Ghana welcomes first citizens evacuated from South Africa
The Ghanaian government has received the first group of nationals evacuated from South Africa, pledging continued support and assistance as they begin rebuilding their lives back home.
The Government of Ghana has welcomed the first group of citizens evacuated from South Africa following recent unrest that affected foreign nationals.
The evacuees arrived in Ghana on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, where they were received by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister James Gyakye Quayson, and other senior government officials.
Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Debrah assured the returnees that the government remains committed to the safety and well-being of all Ghanaian citizens. He said the decision to evacuate them was taken to ensure their protection amid challenging circumstances in South Africa.
Debrah also reaffirmed the government's commitment to helping the evacuees reintegrate into society and rebuild their lives.
Foreign Affairs Minister Ablakwa echoed these sentiments, emphasising that the government would continue to safeguard the welfare, dignity and security of Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
He praised various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), for their role in facilitating the evacuation operation.
Ablakwa announced that each evacuee would receive psychosocial support, medical assistance and a reintegration allowance to help them settle back into life in Ghana.
The evacuees expressed their appreciation to the government for the evacuation effort and the warm welcome they received upon returning home.
