Two learners from different Gauteng schools have been fatally stabbed in separate incidents, prompting outrage and calls for stronger community action to protect pupils.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, has expressed deep sorrow following the deaths of two learners who were fatally stabbed in separate incidents in Johannesburg and Ennerdale.
The first incident involved a 17-year-old Grade 8 learner from Forest High School. The learner was allegedly attacked at Rotunda Park near the school after classes on Friday, 20 March 2026. He was reportedly beaten and stabbed before being rushed to hospital. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.
In a separate case, a Grade 12 learner from Daleview Secondary School was stabbed to death on Monday, 23 March 2026. The incident occurred in an open veld between the school and a nearby shop while the learner was walking home.
Police are currently investigating both incidents, and no arrests have been confirmed at this stage.
The Gauteng Department of Education says psycho-social support services have been arranged to assist affected learners, teachers, and the families of the victims during this difficult time.
Chiloane described the incidents as a painful loss for the education community and extended condolences to the families and school communities. He also called on communities to work with law enforcement to ensure those responsible are brought to justice and to help keep learners safe.
