Pretoria court grants bail of R40k and R80k to accused in R360m Medicare24 tender fraud case

Fourteen accused appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where most were granted bail, while the state opposed bail for the main suspect.

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has granted bail of R40,000 and R80,000 to several accused in a corruption, fraud and Public Finance Management Act case linked to an alleged irregular R360-million tender awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District, owned by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

A total of 14 accused appeared in court on Wednesday. Accused 2, James Murray; accused 3, Brian Cartright; accused 4, Rachel Matjeng; and accused 7, Tunisia Maleka were each granted bail of R80,000.

Meanwhile, accused 5, Alpheus Ngema; accused 6, Nyimeleni Nethengwe; accused 10, Petunia Lenono; accused 11, Ofentse Tlhaole; accused 12, Nonjabulo Mngadi; accused 13, Anton Paulsen; accused 14, Natsengae Monyai; accused 15; and accused 16 were each granted bail of R40,000.

The state opposed bail for Matlala.

The National Prosecuting Authority and the South African Police Service have confirmed that National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has received a summons to appear in court on 21 April.

The case has been postponed to 13 May 2026 for further proceedings.
