Gauteng health urges flu vaccination ahead of winter
Residents are urged to visit their nearest public health clinics to receive the influenza vaccine, with the department assuring the public that the vaccines are safe, effective and have undergone rigorous testing to meet regulatory standards.
The Gauteng Department of Health is encouraging residents to get vaccinated against influenza as the province prepares for the winter season, warning that seasonal flu remains a significant public health concern.
The department said the influenza vaccination programme is aimed at reducing infections and preventing severe illness, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, people living with chronic conditions and healthcare workers.
According to the World Health Organization, influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads easily through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. While many people recover without complications, the virus can lead to serious illness or even death in high-risk individuals.
Health officials emphasised that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent influenza and should be combined with basic hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, proper cough etiquette and good indoor ventilation.
Common flu symptoms include fever, dry cough, sore throat, fatigue, headaches, and muscle pain. Although most people recover within a short time, complications can arise in high-risk groups, including those aged 65 and older, individuals living with HIV, and children on long-term aspirin treatment.
