Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport cracks down hard on festive season offenders

The Gauteng Transport Inspectorate recorded strong festive season law enforcement results, including 27 arrests, 30 vehicle impoundments and the removal of dozens of unroadworthy vehicles from the roads. The department of Roads and Transport says intensified operations will continue to curb drunk driving, corruption and unsafe public transport.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has recorded significant law enforcement outcomes through the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate during festive season operations conducted between 22 and 28 December 2025 across Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

The department on Tuesday said intensified operations were aimed at improving road safety and ensuring compliance, particularly during the high risk festive period when traffic volumes increase significantly. GTI officers focused on reckless driving, drunk driving, vehicle roadworthiness and public transport compliance.

During the reporting period, hundreds of infringement notices were issued, unsafe vehicles were removed from the roads and arrests were made for serious offences. A total of 45 vehicles were discontinued after being found unroadworthy, while 30 vehicles were impounded for operating unlawfully. In addition, 27 arrests were effected, mainly for drunk driving and cases of bribery.

Public transport compliance formed a major part of the operations. Inspectors found 187 minibuses operating without valid licence discs and 193 drivers driving without valid driving licences. A further 65 minibuses were discontinued for failing to meet safety and legal requirements.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said the results demonstrated the department’s zero tolerance approach to lawlessness on the province’s roads.

“Reckless driving, drunk driving and corruption will not be tolerated on our roads. Our inspectors remain visible and decisive in protecting road users during this high risk festive period,” Diale Tlabela said.

She said public transport safety remains a key priority for the department, particularly as many residents rely on taxis and buses to travel during the holiday season.

“Removing unroadworthy vehicles and unlicensed drivers from our roads is a critical intervention to save lives and ensure safe public transport,” she said.

The department said festive season law enforcement operations will continue across Gauteng as authorities seek to curb road fatalities and promote responsible driving behaviour.

Motorists and public transport operators have been urged to comply with traffic laws and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads for all.
