E hailing app providers in Gauteng have been instructed to register their digital platforms with the National Department of Transport as required by national law. MEC Kedibone Diale Tlabela says registration is necessary to create a lawful and transparent public transport system that protects operators and commuters.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has called on all e-hailing app providers operating in the province to register their digital applications with national authorities. The department said this step is required by national law and is necessary for the processing of operating licence applications for e hailing operators.
The call is guided by Section 66 A of the National Land Transport Amendment Act of 2009. The law requires all e-hailing platform providers to register their applications with the National Department of Transport through the National Public Transport Regulator before taking part in any operating licence process at provincial level.
The department said this instruction supports its broader work to implement the amended transport legislation and the latest e-hailing regulations. It also aims to ensure that national and provincial rules are aligned so that public transport in Gauteng remains safe, accessible, transparent and compliant.
MEC Kedibone Diale Tlabela said the expansion of e-hailing in the province makes compliance even more important. Diale Tlabela said the sector has created mobility options for commuters and provided economic opportunities for many operators. She said this growth must happen within clear rules that offer protection to both operators and passengers.
Diale Tlabela said: “The growth of the e hailing service in Gauteng has been significant offering valuable mobility options and creating economic opportunities for thousands of operators. However this growth must take place within a transparent and well regulated environment that protects both operators and commuters.
"The current regulations provide an opportunity to realign the system with national legislation and ensure that all e-hailing platform providers and operators meet the required legal requirements and regulatory standards. We therefore call upon all the app companies operating in Gauteng to work with us by submitting their registration and help us build an accountable efficient and lawful public transport system.”
The department said all e-hailing app providers must visit the National Department of Transport offices at 159 Struben Street Forum Building in Pretoria to submit their registration documents. The department added that registration is in the interest of all app providers since it will allow the Gauteng Public and Road Transport Entity to begin receiving and deciding on operating licence applications.
The Gauteng Public and Road Transport Entity will also hold meetings across the province to give more information and ensure that app providers and operators understand what is required and comply with the law.
