Fire destroys Ngizwe Mchunu’s homestead amid alleged targeting of march leaders
Phakel’umthakathi Ndabandaba says no one was injured after Ngizwe Mchunu’s home was allegedly set alight, claiming the incident may be linked to growing tensions following recent anti-migrant mobilisation in Johannesburg and Durban.
The homestead of Ngizwe Mchunu in Umbumbulu was allegedly set alight after unknown individuals reportedly arrived looking for him while he was in Cape Town.
Neighbours allegedly informed the group that Mchunu and his wife were not home at the time. A short while later, flames were seen coming from the property, leaving parts of the house and furniture destroyed.
Phakel’umthakathi Ndabandaba confirmed on Sunday that no one was injured during the fire. However, he described the incident as a deliberate and planned attack targeting leaders associated with the recent “March and March” protest.
The protests and anti-migrant mobilisation in Johannesburg and Durban have intensified national concern over rising tensions linked to undocumented migration. The demonstrations, which attracted widespread attention on social media and in communities, sparked heated debate around immigration, crime, unemployment and public safety.
Ndabandaba alleged that individuals linked to the marches are now being targeted following the protests, although no official confirmation has been made regarding the motive behind the fire.
Police have not yet released further details, and investigations into the incident are expected to continue.
