Ekurhuleni introduces long-acting HIV prevention injection at selected clinics
Residents in Ekurhuleni can now access Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection that provides up to six months of protection, at selected public healthcare facilities across the city.
The City of Ekurhuleni has welcomed the rollout of Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection, at selected public healthcare facilities across the municipality.
The introduction of Lenacapavir marks a significant step in strengthening HIV prevention efforts, offering residents an innovative option that provides up to six months of protection against HIV infection with a single injection.
Health officials say the new prevention method is designed to make it easier for people at risk of HIV infection to access effective and convenient healthcare services, while reducing the burden of frequent clinic visits associated with some prevention methods.
The rollout forms part of broader efforts to enhance HIV prevention programmes and support communities in reducing new HIV infections.
Residents interested in receiving Lenacapavir are encouraged to visit participating clinics to obtain more information and determine whether the injection is suitable for them. An HIV test is required before treatment can begin.
The City has also urged residents to continue following the national HIV prevention strategy, which includes a combination of biomedical interventions and behavioural measures. These include long-acting injectable prevention options such as Lenacapavir, oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and the consistent use of condoms.
According to the City, the availability of Lenacapavir provides another important tool in the fight against HIV and supports efforts to build healthier and more resilient communities.
Residents can visit their nearest participating clinic or community healthcare facility for further information about the new HIV prevention injection.
