eDumbe selected for child protection month launch amid rising child abuse concerns
Government and civil society organisations are ramping up efforts to safeguard children as Child Protection Month 2026 is set to launch in a vulnerable rural community in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Child Protection Month, commemorated annually across South Africa, aims to raise awareness about children’s rights and the urgent need to protect them from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
During this period, government departments, child protection services, and civil society organisations intensify programmes to mobilise communities and address persistent social challenges affecting children.
This year’s official launch will take place on Sunday, 03 May 2026 in eDumbe, located within the Zululand District Municipality. The rural area has recorded high levels of child abuse, highlighting the campaign’s targeted focus on vulnerable communities in need of urgent intervention and support.
In the lead-up to the launch, the Department of Social Development, alongside its partners, is hosting stakeholder engagement sessions aimed at strengthening coordinated efforts to protect children.
The engagements include discussions with traditional leaders, religious leaders, and traditional healers.
Key focus areas for these engagements include preventing statutory rape through education and awareness, improving early detection and rapid response to risks, and strengthening long-term psychosocial support for affected children.
Stakeholders will also explore ways to drive school and community-based prevention campaigns, while promoting awareness around grooming, online safety, and age-of-consent laws.
Officials say the initiative underscores the importance of a united societal response to protect children and ensure safer environments for their growth and development.
The official Child Protection Month launch is expected to bring together leaders from various sectors, reinforcing the national call to safeguard the wellbeing and rights of every child.
