The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) has issued a strong warning to pupils across the province amid reports of planned “pens down” parties as final examinations draw to a close.
The board said it has received multiple tip-offs from its learner ambassadors about gatherings being organised for 21 and 22 November, when exams end. These events are often associated with underage drinking and unsafe behaviour.
ECLB spokesperson Mgwebi Msiya said all reports have been handed over to law enforcement to prevent the parties from going ahead. Parents have been urged to closely monitor their children’s movements and report any suspicious gatherings.
ECLB CEO Dr Makala said the board, together with law enforcement agencies, will be monitoring hotspot areas across the province.
“I wish to unequivocally send a strong warning to all learners who are planning pens down parties. Law enforcement officers and ECLB liquor inspectors will be all out across the province to ensure these parties are stopped, and drastic action will be taken against young learners who host them,” he said.
Makala said the province cannot risk a repeat of the 2022 Enyobeni Tavern tragedy, where 21 teenagers died during a pens-down celebration.
He further urged parents, community members and liquor traders to play an active role in preventing such parties.
Makala said traders found hosting these events could face immediate cancellation of their liquor licences.
