Collen Mashawana Foundation brings relief to 141 families in Pretoria informal settlement
The Collen Mashawana Foundation has provided relief to 141 families in the Sonskynhoekie Informal Settlement north of Pretoria, donating food parcels, blankets, mattresses, clothing and toys. Founder Dr Collen Mashawana also pledged two houses and solar panels to support vulnerable residents facing poverty and inadequate living conditions.
The Collen Mashawana Foundation (CMF) has provided humanitarian assistance to 141 vulnerable families living in the Sonskynhoekie Informal Settlement, north of Pretoria, as part of its ongoing efforts to support struggling communities across South Africa.
Led by founder Dr Collen Mashawana, the foundation visited the settlement on Friday and distributed mattresses, blankets, clothing, food parcels and toys to residents facing severe socio-economic hardships.
Sonskynhoekie, which translates to “Sunshine Corner” in Afrikaans, is home to families who largely depend on donations and community support due to high unemployment and poor living conditions. Residents continue to battle challenges such as poverty, inadequate housing and limited access to basic resources.
During the visit, the foundation also engaged directly with community members to better understand their needs. Following discussions with residents, Dr Mashawana pledged to donate two houses to assist vulnerable families in the settlement and committed to providing solar panels to help improve access to reliable electricity.
Speaking during the outreach programme, Dr Mashawana said poverty remains one of South Africa’s biggest challenges and stressed the importance of supporting vulnerable communities regardless of race or background.
“The dignity of every South African matters. Our responsibility is to stand with communities in need and contribute towards creating better living conditions and renewed hope for families facing hardship,” he said.
The Collen Mashawana Foundation said it remains committed to working with communities, stakeholders and donors to implement sustainable interventions aimed at restoring dignity and improving lives.
