BMW South Africa recalls 10,961 vehicles over starter defect that could cause overheating
The National Consumer Commission has announced a safety recall affecting 10,961 BMW vehicles sold in South Africa since 2016 due to a defect that could cause engine starting failures, overheating and, in some cases, visible smoke. Owners are urged to book free repairs at authorised BMW dealerships immediately.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a safety recall affecting 10,961 BMW vehicles sold in South Africa from 2016 onwards due to a potential defect that could lead to engine starting problems and, in some cases, overheating.
The recall, issued by BMW South Africa, applies to certain BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3 and X4 models fitted with a Pinion Starter.
According to the manufacturer, a production-related issue may cause increased wear on the starter's solenoid switch after repeated engine starts. This could result in the engine becoming increasingly difficult to start and, under certain circumstances, failing to start altogether.
BMW also warned that the defect could lead to a short circuit within the solenoid switch, potentially causing localised overheating at the starter motor. Drivers may notice smoke while driving or shortly after leaving the vehicle.
As a precaution, BMW has advised owners not to leave their vehicles unattended immediately after starting the engine until the necessary repairs have been completed.
The NCC has urged owners of the affected vehicles to avoid using the "Remote Engine Start" feature through the My BMW App or the remote-control key until their vehicles have been inspected and repaired.
Consumers are encouraged to contact their nearest authorised BMW dealership to schedule an inspection and repair. BMW confirmed that all repairs related to the recall will be carried out free of charge.
