ATM rejects appointment of Roelf Meyer as SA ambassador to US
The African Transformation Movement has strongly rejected the appointment of Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, accusing President Cyril Ramaphosa of undermining the country’s sovereignty and prioritising foreign approval over the interests of its citizens.
The African Transformation Movement has rejected the appointment of Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, calling on government to reconsider the decision.
In a statement on Wednesday, the party said the appointment undermines the spirit of South Africa’s democratic transformation and warned that it could signal growing external influence over the country’s foreign policy direction.
The ATM argued that appointing a former apartheid-era cabinet minister to such a strategic diplomatic position raises serious concerns about historical justice, national sovereignty, and the representation of South Africa’s liberation values in international relations.
The party further claimed that the move reflects a broader concern about the country’s diplomatic priorities and urged government to ensure that ambassadorial appointments align with the principles of transformation and national interest.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended Meyer’s appointment, citing his extensive political experience and involvement in international mediation efforts as key strengths for strengthening relations between South Africa and the United States.
