ANC demands loyalty declarations amid SACP election split
Party members have been given 10 days to choose between campaigning for the ANC or SACP, as tensions rise ahead of local government elections.
The African National Congress (ANC) will issue formal letters to its members, requiring them to clarify their political allegiance as the South African Communist Party (SACP) prepares to contest the upcoming local government elections independently.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said members would be given 10 days to declare whether they intend to campaign for the ANC or the SACP. He warned that failure to respond would have consequences.
“We don’t expect anyone to resign from being a member of the SACP going into these local government elections. Comrades must make a choice and those comrades will be expected to make a choice that is good for themselves and for the party that they would want to go and campaign for,” said Mbalula.
The move signals growing strain within the alliance, as the SACP’s decision to contest elections independently challenges longstanding political arrangements between the two organisations.
ANC First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane also weighed in on the development, highlighting the implications of the SACP’s decision for the governing party and its structures.
