Johannesburg traffic police arrested 173 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol in just seven days as part of intensified festive season law-enforcement operations across the city.
Johannesburg traffic police arrested 173 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol in just seven days as part of intensified festive season law-enforcement operations across the city.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said the arrests were made between 8 and 14 December during roadblocks, roving patrols and targeted operations conducted in all regions under its Tshela Thupa programme.
JMPD chief of police Commissioner Patrick Jaca described the figure as alarming, warning that drunk driving continues to pose a serious threat to road safety, particularly during the festive season.
“The arrest of 173 motorists in just seven days is a number that should shock every responsible citizen. It is a stark reminder of the reckless and life-threatening behaviour that continues to plague our roads,” Jaca said. “Every single drunk driver we remove from the road is a potential life saved, and a preventable tragedy averted.”
The department reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offence.
According to the department, motorists arrested during the operations will be processed through the criminal justice system and could face heavy fines, imprisonment, and the suspension or revocation of their driving licences if convicted.
JMPD urged residents and visitors to make responsible travel choices, including designating a sober driver, using e-hailing services, taxis or public transport, and reporting suspected drunk drivers to authorities.
High-visibility Tshela Thupa operations is expected to continue around the clock throughout December and January, with JMPD warning that enforcement will be intensified.
“Our message is clear: if you drink and drive, you will be arrested,” the department said.
