100 firearms seized from Soweto security company
Police have seized 100 firearms and ammunition from a security company in Soweto after an inspection found alleged non-compliance with the Firearms Control Act.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has seized 100 firearms and ammunition from a security company in Soweto following a compliance inspection.
The firearms were confiscated on Saturday, 22 August 2026, by police officers deployed under Operation Buyisa, which focuses on removing illegal firearms from circulation and ensuring compliance with the Firearms Control Act.
According to a preliminary police report, the security company's Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) accreditation had recently been suspended.
Police allege that the person responsible for the company failed to dispose of the firearms as required after the suspension.
The compliance inspection also found that the company's firearm storage facility did not meet the requirements prescribed by the Firearms Control Act, 60 of 2000.
The 100 firearms and ammunition have been seized and will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether any of the weapons may have been used in the commission of crimes.
Operation Buyisa was established in 2025 as a national intervention aimed at taking illegal firearms out of circulation while promoting compliance with firearms legislation among lawful firearm owners.
The SAPS said it would continue conducting targeted operations to prevent the misuse and proliferation of firearms.
