DJ Cleo bids farewell to Radio 2000 after 28-month run

DJ Cleo has left Radio 2000 after 28 months at the station, with the popular DJ now turning his attention to music, family, studies, live performances and his personal wellbeing.

Popular radio personality and DJ Cleo has officially left Radio 2000 after 28 months at the station.

Cleo, whose real name is Tlou Monyeapao, hosted his final show on Saturday, 22 August, bringing his time at the station to an end.

He joined Radio 2000 on 5 April 2024 and reflected on his stint at the station with gratitude, saying he was proud of what he had achieved during his time there.

One of the highlights of his tenure was The Eshaleni Party with DJ Cleo, which he said developed its own identity among listeners and exceeded the targets initially set for the programme.

The show was also nominated for a Telkom Radio Award during its first year on air.

In his resignation notice dated 21 August, Cleo thanked Radio 2000 management for giving him the opportunity to host the programme, as well as his colleagues and listeners who supported him throughout his time at the station.

He also acknowledged those with whom he had disagreements during his tenure.

Cleo said he was aware that listeners would miss the show's music mixes and distinctive “Eshaleni flavour”, but indicated that his departure did not necessarily mean the end of the brand.

The DJ said he decided to leave the station to redirect his energy towards other priorities, including his music career, family, academic journey and personal wellbeing.

He plans to dedicate more time to completing his degree, live performances and artist development, including mentoring his protégés.

Cleo also made it clear that his departure from Radio 2000 was not a move to a competing station.

He said any future career opportunities would be carefully considered while maintaining his respect for the SABC and Radio 2000.

“I hold the SABC brand and Radio 2000 in high regard,” Cleo said, adding that he would not allow his departure to diminish the positive experience he had during his 28 months at the station.

He wished Radio 2000 continued success and thanked the SABC for allowing him to become part of what he described as the “Youth Endala” family.

Cleo's departure marks the end of his 28-month chapter at Radio 2000 as he shifts his focus towards his career beyond radio and other personal and professional goals.
