In a striking display of law enforcement’s emphasis on security, Vusimuzi Matlala, was seen being escorted by a substantial police convoy on Tuesday as he made his way to court. This heightened security detail comes amidst serious charges that have led to his matter being transferred from the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court to the Gauteng High Court.
The South African Police Services has upgraded the security detail of controversial business figure and alleged member of the drug syndicate, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. This comes as Matlala and his co-accused's matter was transferred from the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court to the High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday for trial.
Matlala, his wife, appeared briefly before the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Tuesday, alongside Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana, and Nthabiseng Nzima.
However, what was more interesting to see was the amount of police inyalas that accompanied Matlala to and from court. A total of 11 police vehicles could be seen as Matlala departed from the Alexandra Magistrate's Court to Kgosi Mampuru Maximum facility in Tshwane, where he is set to spend his Christmas in prison regalia.
Matlala is set to appear before the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee for his alleged role in political interference in the work of the police. His appearance before the committee has been scheduled to take place from 26 to 28 November, 2025.
This week, the ad-hoc committee met virtually to adopt an interim report on the work completed, a report on outstanding consultations, and deliberate on a proposed programme going forward. The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament's SAPS ad hoc committee are both probing corruption allegations that have been running in parallel.
On Tuesday, Matlala's matter was transferred to the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg after the State successfully managed to centralise the various cases against Matlala and his co-accused under one jurisdiction. Their next appearance is set for January 29, 2026 at the High Court.
Matlala and his co-accused are facing 11 counts of attempted murder charges as well as conspiracy to commit murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, amongst others.
Matlala has been linked to the alleged botched hit on his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, in October 2023, with the State also, implicating him in two other attempted murder charges of Seunkie “DJ Vetteys” Mokubung and businessman Joe Sibanyoni.
Meanwhile, Katiso Molefe, another accused linked to these illicit activities, faced centralisation proceedings, with his matter postponed to December 3, 2025, due to logistical issues that affected his co-accused, Michale Pule Tau
, NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, told members of the media that the State has been successful in centralising the case to the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, where it will be enrolled for January 29, 2026.
"The case has now been centralised to January 29, 2026, inclusive of Vusimuzi Cat Matlala. That case has been formally transferred to the High Court for trial. We have received the approval for centralisation of the Pretoria dockets for conspiracy to commit murder as well as charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition," she said.
