Two arrested after JMPD intercepts suspected illegal firearm deal in Lufhereng

Two men have been arrested after Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU) officers intercepted a suspected illegal firearm transaction in Lufhereng.

The arrests were made on Monday afternoon, 24 August 2026, during a targeted crime-prevention operation in the area.

In a statement on Tuesday JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said officers received operational information about an impending illegal firearm transaction involving two men travelling in a white Toyota Vitz.

Officers were deployed to the area and conducted targeted surveillance before spotting a vehicle matching the description.

The officers then activated their blue lights and sirens and carried out a tactical interception, bringing the vehicle to a safe stop.

The two occupants were ordered to exit the vehicle before officers conducted a search.

During the search, officers allegedly found a rifle with a magazine, a pistol with a magazine and live ammunition matching the calibre of the firearms.

Both men were immediately detained at the scene.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) was called in to secure the evidence and conduct forensic processing.

The suspects face charges relating to the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Fihla said the operation highlighted the department's efforts to remove illegal firearms from Johannesburg's streets.

“JMPD commends the swift action of the TRU officers and remains committed to removing illegal weapons from the streets of Johannesburg to ensure the safety of our communities,” said Fihla.

The origin of the firearms remains under investigation.
