Pirates edge African Stars to take CAF Champions League advantage
Orlando Pirates secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Namibia’s African Stars in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie in Botswana on Saturday, leaving the Buccaneers needing to protect their lead in the return leg to book a place in the group stage.
Orlando Pirates took a significant step towards the CAF Champions League group stage after grinding out a 1-0 win against Namibia’s African Stars at the Botswana National Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers will carry a slender advantage into Friday’s second leg at Orlando Amstel Arena, where they will look to finish the job and secure qualification for the next phase of the continental competition.
Despite the demanding conditions in Botswana’s capital, the Soweto giants started brightly, showing attacking intent as they looked to establish an early lead.
Their first meaningful opportunity arrived in the 15th minute when Simphiwe Masilela picked out Gamphani Lungu from a corner. Lungu connected with a diving header but sent his effort narrowly wide.
Yanela Mbuthuma also threatened during the opening half, forcing African Stars goalkeeper Mervin Kasetura into a save before narrowly missing the target after latching onto a well-weighted through ball from Bulelani Sigomoshe.
Pirates enjoyed much of the attacking possession, although they were occasionally tested at the back, with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine called into action to keep the hosts at bay.
Lungu came close again towards the end of the first half, directing a header just wide as the Buccaneers continued to search for a breakthrough.
The sides went into the interval deadlocked, with Pirates needing to find a way past a stubborn African Stars defence.
The visitors resumed with renewed purpose, and Mbuthuma had another opportunity 11 minutes after the restart when he found himself one-on-one with Kasetura. The goalkeeper reacted well to deny the striker a clear attempt at goal.
African Stars had moments of their own but struggled to convert their opportunities, with Chaine and the Pirates defence maintaining their composure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 75th minute when Moremi found the back of the net, rewarding Pirates for their persistence and putting the Soweto side in front.
The goal forced African Stars to push forward in search of an equaliser, placing Pirates under increased pressure during the closing stages.
However, the Buccaneers stood firm defensively while continuing to threaten on the counter, holding on until the final whistle to secure a valuable first-leg victory.
Pirates will now turn their attention to Friday’s return fixture, knowing that another disciplined performance could be enough to seal their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
