SASSA confirms September grant payment date for beneficiaries under review

SASSA says beneficiaries whose grants are under review will have a fourth payment day in September, urging those who do not get paid during the normal cycle not to panic.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries waiting for their September grants have been given clarity on an extra payment date but the agency warns that it is not a fourth general grant payment day.

SASSA has confirmed that Monday, 7 September 2026, has been set aside specifically for beneficiaries whose grants are under review and who are therefore not paid during the normal three-day payment cycle.

The September payment schedule is:

  • 2 September: Older Persons Grants

  • 3 September: Disability Grants

  • 4 September: Children's Grants

  • 7 September: Beneficiaries whose grants are under review

SASSA said beneficiaries who do not receive their money on the first three payment days should not immediately rush to its offices.

“If a beneficiary's grant is under review, payment will be processed on Monday, 07 September 2026, provided that the review requirements have been met,” the agency said.

The clarification comes as beneficiaries can face uncertainty when their payments do not arrive on their expected payment date.

SASSA said reviews are conducted to establish whether beneficiaries still meet the requirements for social assistance and to protect public funds from “fraud, error, and abuse”.

How to check if your grant is under review

Beneficiaries who are selected for a review should ordinarily receive an SMS instructing them to report for the process.

However, SASSA acknowledged that some beneficiaries may miss these notifications because their contact details have changed or are outdated.

To address this, the agency has introduced a WhatsApp enquiry service where beneficiaries can check whether they have been selected for a grant review, life certification or another verification process.

Beneficiaries can send a WhatsApp message to 082 601 0111 to check their status.

SASSA said the service is intended to reduce unnecessary trips to its offices, particularly for beneficiaries who are unsure whether they need to take action.

Beneficiaries urged to keep details updated

The agency is also urging grant recipients to ensure their personal information is accurate and up to date.

This includes their cellphone numbers, residential circumstances, marital status and financial information.

Beneficiaries attending a review may be required to provide documents including an identity document, proof of income, bank statements, proof of residence and other supporting documents specified in their review notification.

SASSA warned that ignoring a review request could have serious consequences.

“Failure to respond to a review request may result in a grant being suspended or lapsing in accordance with the applicable legislation and regulations,” the agency said.

Beware of fake payment information

SASSA has also warned beneficiaries to be careful about misinformation circulating on social media, particularly messages claiming that grant payment dates have changed.

The agency urged beneficiaries to rely on official SASSA communication channels and warned against people asking for personal information, banking details or money in exchange for help with grants.

For beneficiaries whose grants are under review, the key date to remember is 7 September 2026 provided they have met the requirements of the review process.
