G20
Former US President Donald Trump will not attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg and says South Africa should not be part of the group, sparking diplomatic tensions ahead of the global meeting.
Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he will not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg and has questioned South Africa’s membership in the group. Speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami, Trump said that South Africa should not be included in the G20, citing concerns over governance and policy decisions in the country. He added that he would not represent the United States at the summit.
Trump’s remarks reflect his long-standing criticisms of South Africa, particularly regarding land reform and allegations of discrimination against certain communities. The South African government has rejected these claims as inaccurate and emphasised that the country remains committed to democratic principles and human rights.
In recent years, Trump signed an executive order aimed at facilitating the resettlement of white South African farmers described as victims of racial discrimination and directing US aid adjustments related to South Africa. This announcement has added further attention to his stance on the country ahead of the G20 meeting.
The G20 summit, scheduled for November 22 to 23, brings together leaders from the world’s largest economies to discuss trade, security, climate change, and other global issues. South Africa’s role as host has been viewed as an opportunity to highlight the influence of emerging economies on international policy. Analysts say Trump’s absence and his criticism of South Africa’s membership may generate debate about the criteria for G20 participation and the geopolitical standing of the continent.
South African officials have stated that they remain focused on ensuring the summit proceeds smoothly and will use the platform to advance the country’s economic and diplomatic interests. The government has also reiterated its commitment to hosting an inclusive summit that addresses global challenges while promoting cooperation among member nations.
