Makgothi Thobakgale leads an unannounced search, seizing drugs, cellphones, and weapons in a crackdown on prison contraband.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) led by National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale conducted an unannounced early morning search at St Albans Correctional Centre on Thursday, reinforcing efforts to tighten security and maintain discipline within correctional facilities.
The targeted operation resulted in the seizure of various prohibited items, including cellphones, sharp objects, mandrax tablets, and packets of dagga. Authorities say the raid forms part of ongoing interventions to clamp down on illegal activities inside prisons.
Thobakgale said unannounced searches are critical in preserving the integrity of correctional centres and ensuring a safe environment for both inmates and officials. He emphasised that contraband undermines rehabilitation efforts and fuels criminal networks operating from within prison walls.
The Department of Correctional Services has intensified similar operations across the country to address security breaches and enforce compliance with regulations.
Officials warned that further any staff member found aiding or abetting criminal activities will be subjected to disciplinary action and may face criminal prosecution.
