Stuart-James Scharnick has been arrested following allegations that he intimidated journalist Herman Moloi.
Sowetan journalist Herman Moloi has opened an intimidation case against Stuart-James Scharnick, who was arrested after allegedly confronting the reporter during a tea break at the Madlanga Commission.
Sowetan journalist Herman Moloi laid a charge of intimidation against Scharnick at the Madlanga Commission.
Scharnick allegedly confronted Moloi during a tea break over a photograph.
Sowetan has strongly condemned the incident, saying threats against journalists undermine democracy and media freedom.
The newspaper says a complaint has been lodged with the Madlanga Commission and a police case has been opened.
"Threats against journalists are a threat against democracy. Journalists must be free to report on matters of public interest without fear, threats or harassment. A threat against journalists does not only affect the individual, but also adversely impacts the public's right to know."
"We call on law enforcements to act swiftly against the perpetrator to protect media freedom," Sowetan Editor Sibongakonke Shoba said.
