Fuel prices in South Africa are expected to increase in December, with 95-octane petrol rising by up to 21c per litre and diesel by as much as 84c/l. The forecasted surge is linked to global oil prices and currency pressures, just as holiday travel is about to accelerate.
South African motorists are likely to see another fuel price increase in December, driven by rising global oil costs and pressure on the rand. According to early forecasts from the Central Energy Fund, the “under-recovery” on fuel is mounting, forcing higher pump prices.
Analysts estimate that 93-octane petrol could rise by 16c per litre, while 95-octane may go up by 21c/l. Diesel is expected to rise more sharply, by between 69c and 84c per litre, depending on the grade, and illuminating paraffin could increase by roughly 74c/l.
After a recent dip in early November when petrol prices fell by around 51c/l for both petrol grades, the predicted December hike threatens to erode those savings just as demand peaks for the festive season. The rise will also likely add to inflationary pressure: transport companies may pass on higher fuel costs to consumers, pushing up the cost of goods and living.
