Sextortion accused Ifeel Simango abandons bail bid as charges mount
Alleged Soweto sextortion kingpin Ifeel Simango will remain behind bars after abandoning his bail application, with the case postponed to September 9 as investigators continue building their case against him.
The case against alleged Soweto sextortion kingpin Ifeel Simango has been postponed to September 9 after the 30-year-old abandoned his formal bail application in the Protea Glen Magistrate's Court.
Simango, who remains in custody, is facing charges of extortion and money laundering following his arrest by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Orlando West, Soweto, on July 15.
His arrest forms part of an investigation into what authorities have described as a sophisticated international online extortion, sextortion and money laundering syndicate.
The decision to abandon his bid for bail comes as prosecutors continue expanding the case against him.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale previously confirmed that investigators had added a money laundering charge while continuing to gather evidence against the accused.
She said investigators are working to identify and trace all alleged victims linked to the syndicate and determine whether they will testify in South Africa or from their respective countries.
According to the Hawks, the investigation was launched following the death of a minor boy who was allegedly manipulated into sending explicit images of himself via WhatsApp to an individual using a fraudulent online profile.
Police allege that after obtaining the images, Simango demanded large sums of money from the victim while threatening to distribute the explicit content on social media if payment was not made.
The victim allegedly transferred R232,919.38 into a PayPal account linked to Simango. Investigators further allege that despite the victim expressing severe distress and suicidal thoughts, the explicit images were later published on Instagram.
The victim subsequently died by suicide and reportedly left behind a note detailing the alleged ordeal.
