The SAPS has handed the investigation into the fatal shooting of ANC Ward 17 councillor Sibusiso Khwela to the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team, citing the specialised unit's track record in solving politically motivated murders.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has transferred the investigation into the murder of ANC eThekwini Ward 17 councillor Sibusiso Khwela to the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), as it emerged that the suspected gunman allegedly gained access to the councillor by pretending to be a resident seeking assistance at his constituency office.
Khwela was shot and killed in Klaarwater, Durban, and the specialised unit has now assumed responsibility for leading the investigation.
SAPS said the decision was taken by Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, who expressed confidence in the task team's ability to investigate the case thoroughly.
The Political Killings Task Team has built a reputation for successfully investigating politically motivated killings in KwaZulu-Natal, prompting the Acting National Commissioner to entrust the unit with the high-profile investigation.
According to SAPS, PKTT detectives are already on the ground and will coordinate all aspects of the investigation to identify those responsible for the councillor's murder.
Police said the priority is to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought before the courts as investigations continue into the motive behind the killing.
