SAPS officer under investigation after alleged bribery caught on camera
An investigation is underway after a SAPS officer was allegedly caught on camera soliciting a bribe.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has identified a police officer seen in a viral video circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, allegedly soliciting a bribe from a member of the public.
In a statement on Wednesday police said a criminal case of corruption has been registered for immediate investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit. A parallel internal departmental case has also been instituted against the officer.
SAPS reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption, stressing that accepting or soliciting a bribe is both a criminal offence and a serious violation of the organisation’s Code of Conduct.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni, condemned the alleged conduct, warning that officers who betray public trust will face the full might of the law.
Police have urged members of the public not to offer bribes and to report any incidents of corruption or extortion involving SAPS officials through official reporting channels.
