The board of South African Airways has confirmed the resignation of CEO John Lamola, with Barbara Creecy accepting his departure as the airline prepares for a leadership transition.
The Board of South African Airways on Friday announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, John Lamola.
In a statement, both the board and Transport Minister Barbara Creecy confirmed they have accepted his resignation, which takes effect at the end of April.
Lamola, who took over the reins in May 2022, led the national carrier through its post-business rescue recovery and the turbulent period following the Covid-19 pandemic.
While the reasons for his sudden exit remain unclear, his tenure was marked by periods of controversy. His appointment was previously clouded by allegations of improper political interference involving Deputy President Paul Mashatile and Creecy.
However, an investigation by the Public Protector later found the claims to be unsubstantiated.
Matshela Seshibe, the current CEO of SAA subsidiary Air Chefs, has been appointed as Acting Group CEO. The SAA board said that it also noted the recent resignation of three board members for varying reasons.
The airline said the process to recruit a permanent group CEO will commence shortly.
Lamola’s departure comes at a critical time for SAA as it continues efforts to rebuild its operations and restore financial sustainability in a highly competitive aviation sector.
