Rooigrond prison escapee Edward Madiba rearrested
Rooigrond Maximum Security Correctional Centre escapee Edward Khomotso Madiba has been rearrested after escaping from the North West prison on 6 September 2026. Correctional Services is investigating the possibility of an inside job.
Edward Khomotso Madiba, the offender who escaped from the Rooigrond Maximum Security Correctional Centre in the North West, has been rearrested.
Madiba escaped from the correctional facility on 6 September 2026, while serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and the violation of parole conditions.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed his apprehension on Thursday and said investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding his escape.
The department is also probing the possibility that the escape may have involved an inside job.
Madiba's rearrest follows a search operation launched after he escaped from the facility.
Correctional Services said further investigations will determine how the offender managed to escape and whether anyone assisted him from within the correctional centre.
