PSIRA, SAPS arrest 57 unregistered security officers during nationwide compliance raids
Joint operations by PSIRA and SAPS across four provinces resulted in the arrest of 57 unregistered security officers, including 16 foreign nationals, while 12 security businesses now face Code of Conduct investigations.
The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS), has arrested 57 unregistered security officers during joint compliance operations conducted in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.
The coordinated law enforcement operations took place in Lenasia, Athlone, White River and Greenwood Park as part of ongoing efforts to enforce compliance within South Africa's private security industry.
PSIRA said that those arrested comprised 41 South African citizens and 16 foreign nationals. The foreign nationals included six Congolese, four Malawians, three Zimbabweans, two Mozambicans and one Mosotho national.
In addition to the arrests, PSIRA opened 12 Code of Conduct inquiries against security businesses for alleged non-compliance with industry regulations.
The authority said the deployment of untrained and unregistered security officers is a violation of the Code of Conduct for security service providers and remains one of the key focus areas of its compliance and enforcement programme.
PSIRA reiterated that anyone rendering a private security service must first undergo the required training and be registered with the regulator before performing security duties.
The authority said it will continue working closely with SAPS through joint law enforcement operations to strengthen compliance and ensure that security companies and officers adhere to the laws governing South Africa's private security industry.
