One Eskom employee has been killed and another hospitalised after coming under gunfire while travelling home from work near Witbank, prompting a police investigation and a call for restraint from Eskom.
Police in Witbank are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident involving Eskom employees on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, at about 17:00.
According to police, the incident occurred at the corner of the R547 and D455 roads in Rietspruit, near Witbank. Officers arriving at the scene found paramedics attending to a silver bakkie that was parked in the middle of the road and riddled with bullet holes.
A man was found seated in the driver’s seat with fatal gunshot wounds, while a female passenger who was also shot was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital for further medical care.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two victims were travelling home from work at the time of the attack. The deceased has been identified as 39-year-old Bongani Madonsela. Police said he sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body, and at least 15 spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. Both victims are employees of Eskom.
Eskom has since confirmed with deep sadness that the two employees, who are husband and wife, are from Kriel Power Station. The power utility said the husband succumbed to his injuries, while his wife remains in hospital receiving medical attention.
In a statement on Saturday, Eskom cautioned against speculation and unverified claims circulating in the public domain, stressing that investigations by the South African Police Service and other authorities are still ongoing.
“As investigations are still underway, it is premature and irresponsible to make definitive claims or accusations. We urge the public and the media to allow law enforcement the space to complete the investigation process,” Eskom said.
The utility added that it is working closely with authorities to assist with the investigation and is providing support to the affected family and staff members during this difficult period. Eskom said it will share updates as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has condemned the attack, describing it as a barbaric act. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and appealed to community members to come forward with information that could help bring the perpetrators to justice.
Police are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in tracing and arresting the suspects to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Desmond Kgwedi, on 076 509 6073, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or submit information via the MySAPS App. All information will be treated as confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.
