Unisa marks two years since the High Court halted a bid to place it under administration, a turning point that strengthened its stability. Despite the disputed 2023 assessor report, the university has since improved in global rankings, research output and financial governance, reinforcing its upward trajectory.
OR Tambo International Airport has opened a new “Smart Tourism” Visitor Information Centre—fully digital and paperless, offering real-time cultural and travel information about all nine South African provinces. Launched just before the G20 Summit, the centre aims to welcome and guide global visitors.
OR Tambo International Airport has launched a fully digital, real-time Tourism Information Centre designed to transform the way visitors experience South Africa from the moment they land. The centre, unveiled on Monday, introduces a paperless, interactive system that provides travellers with instant access to cultural, heritage and travel information across all nine provinces.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Tourism, South African Tourism and Airports Company South Africa. It forms part of a broader effort to modernise the country’s tourism infrastructure ahead of major international arrivals, including delegates attending the upcoming G20 Summit.
The new information hub is equipped with virtual displays offering guides to experiences, attractions, transport options and accommodation. It replaces traditional brochures with a streamlined, environmentally friendly system designed to promote sustainability while improving visitor convenience.
Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille said the centre represents a modern gateway into the country and aligns with global best practice. She noted that South Africa needs to ensure its tourism offerings are easy to navigate, accessible and attractive to both international and domestic travellers.
Officials highlighted that the platform is built to respond instantly to visitor needs, providing real-time updates on events, travel routes, weather, safety information and cultural activities. It also integrates with provincial tourism systems to ensure that travellers are always informed about nearby experiences and community-based attractions.
The launch was attended by tourism leaders, industry stakeholders and airport management, who emphasised the importance of investing in technology to boost one of South Africa’s most critical economic sectors. The centre is expected to improve visitor satisfaction and support efforts to revive tourism growth after years of global disruptions.
With OR Tambo handling the majority of the country’s international traffic, the digital centre is positioned as a first point of contact for millions of travellers. Stakeholders believe the innovation will strengthen South Africa’s reputation as a welcoming, modern and competitive destination.
