The man linked to the controversial “Goolammv” social media account, Goolam Vawda, has been found dead in a Sandton hotel. Police say no foul play is suspected at this stage, but investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of death.
A man associated with one of South Africa’s most controversial social media accounts has been found dead in a Sandton hotel, prompting renewed public attention around his online activities.
Goolam Vawda, believed to be the operator of the widely followed “Goolammv” account, was discovered unresponsive in his hotel room on Sunday. Emergency services were called to the scene, where he was declared dead.
Gauteng police confirmed that preliminary findings do not point to foul play, though a post-mortem examination has been scheduled to establish the cause of death. Investigations are continuing.
Vawda became a polarising figure online, with the “Goolammv” account drawing large audiences while also being linked to allegations of online fraud, impersonation and misleading financial schemes. Law enforcement agencies had previously acknowledged that complaints and investigations related to the account were under review.
The Hawks and SAPS have, in the past, warned members of the public about social media scams that exploit trust, luxury branding and influencer culture to lure victims.
Hotel management confirmed that they are cooperating fully with police. No arrests have been made.
News of Vawda’s death has triggered mixed reactions online, with some expressing shock while others revisited long-standing concerns about the account’s alleged activities.
Police have urged the public to refrain from speculation until all forensic and investigative processes have been concluded. Vawda’s family has not yet released a public statement.
