The uMkhonto weSizwe Party says it has registered two criminal cases with IPID, one involving the death of a 16yr old boy and another concerning an alleged torture and death in Cato Manor. The party says it will closely monitor the investigations and expects a thorough, independent, and expeditious process with accountability for any wrongdoing.
The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) says it has registered two criminal cases with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate following serious incidents involving alleged deaths.
In a statement on Thursday, the party confirmed that one case, reference CCN2025120359, relates to the death of a 16-year-old boy, while the second, CCN2025120361, concerns an alleged torture and death matter in Cato Manor. The party said it initiated the complaints directly with IPID, marking a step toward accountability and the rule of law.
“We reaffirm our commitment to justice for victims and their families, and to ensuring that no one is above the law,” said MK Party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela.
The MK Party said it will closely monitor the investigations and expects a thorough, independent, and expeditious process, with consequences for any wrongdoing uncovered.
IPID, an independent body tasked with investigating police-related deaths, torture, assault, and corruption, is now formally probing the matters. The directorate operates independently of the South African Police Service and reports to the Minister of Police.
The registration of the cases comes amid growing public concern over accountability in incidents involving minors and allegations of police misconduct. Civil society organisations and political parties have repeatedly called for stronger oversight and faster investigations to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
The MK Party said its decision to register the cases was motivated by concerns over alleged abuses and the need for independent investigations. It added that it will continue to engage with IPID and other oversight bodies to ensure that the investigations are fair and transparent.
IPID has not yet released further details on the circumstances surrounding the two cases or the progress of the investigations. The outcome of the probes will determine whether criminal charges will be pursued against any individuals implicated in the incidents. At the time of print, IPID had not commented.
