Matlala pleads guilty in SAPS Medicare24 corruption case
Alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala has pleaded guilty to fraud, corruption and money laundering charges linked to the controversial SAPS Medicare24 tender and has agreed to cooperate with the State.
Alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala has pleaded guilty to all charges against him in the corruption case involving the controversial SAPS Medicare24 tender.
Matlala entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the State, admitting to charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering arising from the multimillion-rand contract awarded to Medicare24.
The tender was initially advertised at R360 million, but the final contract value was reduced to R228 million. Court proceedings revealed that approximately R50 million had already been paid out before the contract was cancelled.
During proceedings, the State disclosed that Matlala had agreed to become a State witness and would provide evidence relating to the tender deal. Prosecutors told the court that information supplied by Matlala through his legal representatives could implicate additional senior officials allegedly involved in the contract.
As part of the plea agreement, the State and defence jointly requested a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence, citing Matlala's cooperation and the assistance he has offered to investigators.
The proposed sentence includes a 15-year prison term, with seven years suspended on condition that Matlala continues to cooperate with law enforcement authorities, provides statements when required, testifies about his own involvement and that of others, and does not commit further offences.
However, the final decision on whether to accept the plea and sentencing agreement rests with the court. The magistrate will determine whether the proposed sentence is appropriate.
