South African Maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose has won the Best Independent Artist (African) award at the prestigious Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards (HAPA Awards) held in Los Angeles, USA.
The recognition marks a significant milestone in his career and highlights the growing global appreciation for maskandi, one of South Africa’s most culturally rooted music genres.
Mpungose expressed gratitude for the honour and emphasised the cultural weight of this moment for South Africans and Zulu music lovers worldwide.
The HAPAwards established in 2017, celebrate talent from Africa and the African diaspora, acknowledging individuals who have made significant contributions to arts, entertainment, and community development.
“This award is a blessing and a responsibility. It shows that maskandi is not just music, it is history, identity, and a voice for our people. To see it recognised on a global stage fills me with pride and humility. This win belongs to every supporter who has walked with me. Thank you for believing in maskandi and believing in me," said Mpungose.
His international win highlights years of dedication, loyal fan support, and Mpungose’s unwavering mission to preserve and elevate traditional music in a contemporary era. Maskandi, often regarded as the soul of rural South Africa — continues to serve as a rich medium for storytelling, social commentary, humour, personal struggles, and the spiritual and cultural expression of Zulu heritage.
Over the past ten years, Mpungose has established himself as one of South Africa’s leading independent artists. From selling out stadiums in Durban, Johannesburg, and Pietermaritzburg to headlining major events like the Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White and Blue Nation Festival, he has shown that maskandi not only survives but resonates strongly with younger audiences.
His albums consistently achieve platinum status, and his music videos perform exceptionally well across digital platforms.
The accolade places maskandi among the African music genres gaining international recognition — alongside amapiano, Afro-pop, and contemporary African soul. It underscores a growing global appreciation for authenticity in music, with audiences gravitating towards artists whose work reflects genuine stories, lived realities, and deep spiritual roots.
This marks a defining moment for maskandi’s global journey — a genre now stepping onto the world stage with dignity, respect, and an expanding influence.
On November 8, 2025, Mpungose will host the 4th annual Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White and Blue Nation Festival in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. He is also in the running for Best Male Artist (African), with the winner set to be announced on Sunday, November 2, 2025.
