Eastern Cape police are searching for eight detainees who escaped from Maluti police cells, urging the public to assist while warning the suspects are dangerous.
Police in the Eastern Cape have launched a manhunt after eight detainees escaped from Afsondering Police Station in Maluti on Saturday, 4 April 2026.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the escape were still under investigation.
The escapees have been identified as Asiphe Yawu, Abraham Goboza, Kwanele Mzala, Siphelele Mkhulisi, Thabo Nana, Siphelele Nondolo, Anele Ludidi, and Sinethemba Mazendala.
Police have also opened a separate case of aiding and abetting to establish whether the escape was assisted by individuals either inside or outside the police station.
Members of the public are urged to come forward with any information that could assist in locating the suspects. Police have warned the public not to attempt to apprehend the escapees, as they are considered dangerous. All information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.
