Malema wants Ngizwe Mchunu jailed for 6 months with no option of fine in court application
EFF leader Julius Malema has filed an urgent contempt of court application against Ngizwe Mchunu, seeking a six-month jail term, while Mchunu claims he was turned away by police after new charges were added and accuses Malema of distraction tactics amid ongoing tensions.
The President of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has on Monday, 8 June 2026, filed an urgent contempt of court application at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria against Ngizwe Mchunu.
The application seeks an order declaring Mchunu guilty of contempt of court and sentencing him to six months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.
It is alleged that Mchunu continued making statements considered defamatory towards Malema despite a court order issued on 5 June 2026. The application further states that he allegedly failed to comply with and respect the court order.
The matter has been scheduled for hearing on 17 June 2026 at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
Meanwhile, Mchunu has confirmed that he voluntarily handed himself over to the police after being advised by his legal representatives. However, he claims that upon arrival at the police station, he was turned away after being informed that additional charges had been added.
Mchunu also alleged that Malema and his legal team are attempting to shift attention away from ongoing public activities, including a march related to concerns about illegal immigration. The claims have not been independently verified.
