Madlanga Commission in talks over possible extension
The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry says it is engaging the Presidency over a possible extension as it faces mounting pressure to complete its work before the current August deadline.
The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has confirmed that it is in discussions with the Presidency about a possible extension of its mandate, as it races to conclude its work before its current deadline in August.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the inquiry is engaging the Presidency on the possibility of extending the commission's term, citing the pressure to complete its investigations within the remaining timeframe.
His comments come a day after President Cyril Ramaphosa indicated that he would consider granting the commission additional time if it formally requested an extension.
Speaking on Monday, Ramaphosa praised the commission's progress, saying its work is beginning to uncover important information and reaffirming his commitment to ensuring the inquiry completes its mandate.
The commission was established to investigate allegations of corruption, criminality and undue influence within the South African Police Service (SAPS), the criminal justice system and related state institutions.
It has heard evidence from senior police officials, politicians and other witnesses in recent weeks as it probes claims that organised crime networks may have infiltrated law enforcement structures.
Michaels said discussions with the Presidency are ongoing, but no final decision has yet been made on whether the commission's term will be extended.
