Limpopo police intercepted a Ford Ranger packed with illicit Remington Gold cigarettes worth R240,000. The suspects fled on foot, abandoning the vehicle. A manhunt is underway, with police urging the public to report any information through Crime Stop or the MySAPS app.
Limpopo police have confiscated a Ford Ranger loaded with illicit cigarettes valued at roughly R240,000 after the vehicle was abandoned by its occupants during a police interception.
The Mahwelereng Flying Squad stopped the bakkie on Sterkfontein Road after receiving intelligence about a suspicious vehicle travelling between the R101 and R518. As officers moved in, the occupants jumped out and fled into nearby bushes, leaving the Ford Ranger behind.
Inside the vehicle, police found 48 master boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes, a brand frequently linked to cross-border smuggling syndicates operating between South Africa and neighbouring countries.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that the vehicle and the illicit goods were seized and will form part of the ongoing investigation. A search is now underway to track down the suspects, with officers following several leads.
Police have appealed to the public for assistance. Information can be reported to Warrant Officer Resimate Ngobeni, the Crime Stop hotline, or submitted anonymously through the MySAPS App. Authorities say community cooperation remains essential in dismantling cigarette smuggling operations across the province.
