The City of Johannesburg has awarded new smart-card permits to more than 160 informal traders after a two-week verification process. The move aims to formalise street trading in the inner city and ensure order, registration, and fair access to trading spaces.
The City of Johannesburg has handed out smart-card permits to more than 160 informal traders operating in the CBD following a two-week verification process mandated by a Gauteng High Court order.
Traders applied at the city’s informal trading office at 66 Jorissen Place, where officials verified identity, proof of residence, and City health-department certificates before approving permits.
The new smart cards feature a QR code linked to the trader’s registration and assigned stall, helping the City monitor trading activities transparently and reduce fraud.
