JMPD mourns off-duty officer killed in Orange Farm shooting
A Johannesburg Metro Police officer, Lindani Moses Maleka, was shot and killed while off duty in Orange Farm. The 30-year-old was attacked by unknown suspects while sitting in his vehicle after work. Police have launched a murder investigation and are appealing to the public for information.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is mourning the tragic loss of Officer Lindani Moses Maleka, who was fatally shot while off duty on the evening of 13 April 2026 in Orange Farm.
The 30-year-old officer was attacked on Sizanani Street in Extension 6A shortly after completing his shift. According to preliminary reports, Maleka had arrived at a residence to visit a companion and was seated in his vehicle when unidentified suspects approached.
The suspects allegedly forced the female passenger out of the vehicle before opening fire on the officer. He sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services.
Authorities confirmed that despite the violent attack, the officer’s service firearm was not taken. A murder case has been opened at Orange Farm SAPS, and investigations are ongoing.
JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, expressed the department’s grief, describing the incident as a devastating loss. He extended condolences to Maleka’s family and loved ones, calling the fallen officer a dedicated protector of the city.
