Home Affairs official nabbed in Pinetown corruption sting
A 43-year-old official is expected to appear in court after allegedly attempting to bribe an investigator.
A Home Affairs official in Pinetown has been arrested following a corruption investigation linked to the alleged registration of a fraudulent death.
The Department of Home Affairs’ Counter Corruption Unit launched a probe after the official reportedly facilitated a fake death registration last year. During the investigation, the 43-year-old woman allegedly attempted to bribe an investigator with R3,000.
Authorities then set up a sting operation on Tuesday afternoon with the assistance of the South African Police Service (SAPS), leading to her arrest.
She has since been formally charged and is expected to appear in court soon.
Provincial manager Cyril Mncwabe welcomed the arrest, saying it forms part of an intensified effort to root out corruption within the department.
He added that a firm clean-up operation is underway targeting officials involved in fraudulent and unethical activities.
