Ghana evacuates nearly 1,000 citizens from South Africa amid crackdown on illegal immigration
Ghana has repatriated about 1,000 of its citizens from South Africa as tensions surrounding illegal immigration continue to escalate, with authorities pledging support, compensation efforts and reintegration programmes for those returning home.
The Government of Ghana has evacuated approximately 1,000 Ghanaian nationals from South Africa following recent tensions linked to the country's intensified focus on illegal immigration.
Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the government had fulfilled its commitment to ensure that no Ghanaian citizen was left in harm's way.
Speaking after receiving the latest group of returnees, Ablakwa described it as a privilege to welcome fellow citizens home, emphasising that Ghana would continue to protect and support its people during times of difficulty.
He said the government's work was far from complete, outlining plans to provide returning nationals with dignified reintegration assistance, including medical care, psychosocial support and employment opportunities.
Ghanaian authorities also intend to pursue compensation for citizens who were forced to leave behind businesses, properties and other assets during the unrest.
The minister further pledged to strengthen efforts aimed at advancing the vision of African unity championed by Ghana's founding president, Kwame Nkrumah, through greater regional integration and cooperation.
Ablakwa praised officials from Ghana's Foreign Ministry and the country's High Commission in Pretoria, as well as several government agencies and international partners, for coordinating what he described as a smooth and efficient evacuation operation.
He also acknowledged the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ethiopian Airlines and members of the media.
In addition, he expressed gratitude to Ghanaian business leaders who have partnered with the government to help create employment opportunities for returning citizens.
The minister also commended President John Mahama for his leadership throughout the repatriation effort, reaffirming the administration's commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of all Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
The evacuation comes as South Africa continues to grapple with concerns over illegal immigration, with anti-illegal immigration demonstrations and enforcement operations taking place in several parts of the country.
Ghanaian authorities have indicated they will continue monitoring the situation while supporting citizens who choose to return home.
