Gautrain extends Sandton train services for Soweto Derby and weekend events
Gautrain will provide dedicated return bus transport for eligible Soweto Derby ticket holders travelling to FNB Stadium on Saturday, while extending late-night train services from Sandton Station until midnight to accommodate weekend events.
Gautrain has announced additional transport arrangements for football fans attending the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, October 31.
The transport operator will also extend its train services from Sandton Station to accommodate people attending Johannesburg Pride, the Replenishment Concert and other events in the area.
The Soweto Derby match ticket and Gautrain return bus transport package has sold out.
Fans who purchased the package will receive return bus transport between Park Station and FNB Stadium. However, standard Gautrain train fares will be charged separately.
According to the Gautrain Management Agency, match tickets will be scanned at Park Station, and only valid ticket holders who purchased the transport package will be allowed to board the dedicated buses.
The buses will operate between Park Station and FNB Stadium from 10am to 7pm, with passengers dropped off and collected at the stadium’s Transport Hub.
Gautrain Management Agency chief executive Tshepo Kgobe said the service would provide football fans with a convenient transport option to the match.
“Gautrain will offer fans a convenient and seamless way to get to the Soweto Derby, building on our experience in supporting major social and lifestyle events across Gauteng,” Kgobe said.
Passengers travelling by train can also benefit from a reduced station parking fee of R10, compared with R135 for those who do not use the rail service.
Meanwhile, Gautrain will run extended late-night train services from Sandton Station on Saturday.
The last train will depart Sandton at midnight, extending the usual service closing time of 8.30pm.
The additional service is intended to accommodate attendees of Johannesburg Pride and the Replenishment Concert, as well as other passengers travelling in the Sandton area.
Gautrain said the extended operating hours would not apply to the Airport Line.
