Five people were gunned down in a brazen daylight shooting outside a tuck shop in Atteridgeville, prompting a major police manhunt as investigators work to uncover the motive behind the deadly attack.
Five people were shot and killed outside a tuck shop in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, on Tuesday afternoon. According to Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the shooting occurred at about 13:15 in Jeffsville, Block JV.
Mthombeni said the victims were standing outside a tuck shop when they were approached by an unknown number of suspects, who opened fire without saying a word before fleeing the scene. All five victims were declared dead at the scene.
In response to the incident, the provincial commissioner has mobilised additional police resources. Members of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit, Forensic Crime Scene Management, Crime Intelligence and the Provincial Tracking Team were deployed to process the scene and interview witnesses.
Police confirmed that a case of five counts of murder will be registered. The motive for the attack remains unknown and will form part of the ongoing investigation.
